LIYV YOUR PHANTOM
Seattle-based artist Liyv is known for her colourful indie-pop and awesome self descriptions. For example, she refers to herself as “that weird girl in high school who was too into music” and on a musical level, she makes “songs for sad people who like bright colours.” Throughout the year, this natural outsider has been releasing one song a month and it was about six months ago that we hopped on board for her Imogen Heap-esque ‘Little Fox’, followed by three pastel pop tunes ‘Now You Say You Love Me’, ‘You’re Not Going To Ruin My Life’ and ‘Laser Eyes’. As this young creative approaches the end of her ambitious project, she shares ‘Your Phantom’, a watercolour pop song that clarifies Liyv’s gift for songwriting even further. This latest track is rather withheld on the instrumentation in favour of minimalist electronica and a sustained keyboard. Her breathy, soulful vocal is audibly lo-fi adding to the potent honesty of her vulnerable words “I don’t know why I love you, I don’t know why I care.” The last minute of the track presents a more experimental side to Liyv, ending with a glitchy lullaby setting ‘Your Phantom’ to rest. - HT
